Remove all journal caps except A3, A5 and A1. We strongly recommend these be professionally installed by an experienced engine builder to check clearances and fitment. I've got a chip to put in the ecu but I've being holding off installing it. Most engines always have a longer duration on the intake vs exhaust because the intake draws vacuum, by doing this swap you're taking advantage of the slightly hotter cam. On the N54 and S54 engine the timing of each camshaft is controlled by two solenoids, one to retard and the other to advance the timing.
Do not remove vanos gear from the cam, just shorten it down with the grinder 5mm. This makes them very susceptible to bending and adverse side loads that can be placed on them during the removal process. Power gains across the board with calm idle. It was well written and well thought thru. The key to safely removing the camshaft is to reduce the uneven forces that are placed on it during the removal process. It is possible the camshaft was part of the original issue, but not bad enough to notice. Higher-flow fuel injectors, larger mass-air sensor, and custom programming are strongly recommended. Begin tightening the bearing cap for cylinder number one, a quarter turn on each nut, alternating as you go. At this point, with the tool in place, you can remove all of the nuts that hold each of the cam bearing caps in place.
A3 and A5 are the only journals that are carrying any load with the camshaft in this position. The stock S54 rocker arm is un-coated. Tighten, but leave enough screw action if using a bar clamp with screw adjuster, you'll need that in a minute. A slightly lumpy idle is expected at cold start but will be smooth once at operating temperature. Essentially you must have a friend with a bearing press and an ability to make a solid, wooden jig that will level the top of the head while it's under the press an some kind of solid square stock. By watching the gap here and comparing it to the gaps at E4 and E6, you can verify that the cam does not hang up on the thrust surfaces. Alternate Method: If you can't get to a point where all of the lifters for cylinders 2-6 can rotate in their bores, then you need to slightly alter the previous procedure.
