Bobby quickly figures out that Ted has some other purpose in mind. Here, it feels used and shopworn, a few nice moments that never amount to anything. That part is left up to the audience, but in the end, it's the type of movie you feel good about.
As Bounce contained a notion of Thomas Newman's popular compositional style heard in some of his more recent projects, so does Danna's latest project. He tries to play coy with Brautigan's abilities -- do they really exist or is Bobby just imagining them? Those who enjoy the pop music of that era may find these same cues a nostalgic experience. Director Scott Hicks sets out to create a bittersweet meditation on lost youth, contrasting the joys of Eisenhower's America with the dark underbelly of postwar prosperity. The film primarily takes place in the 1950s but is book-ended by modern-day scenes , and so it's not surprising that the bulk of the soundtrack is comprised of tunes from that era. He and Bobby befriend each other, giving the boy his first legitimate father figure and opening him up to the wide world beyond the front door. The soundtrack released by Decca Records is a difficult one to rate.
At the same time, fans may be a little put-off by the dominance of non-score cues. He asks Bobby to keep an eye out for these mysterious enemies, knowing that his time may be running out. The supernatural element, in the form of Brautigan's psychic abilities - which he passes on to Bobby — is really only used as a plot device.
