Realizing the fight never occurred, and yet the mirror is still broken, and that she had stabbed herself, Nina quietly continues changing. Nina Portman is a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. Every ounce of praise directed toward her is richly deserved. Experiencing what she needs to in order to embody the Black Swan, combined with the pressure of the role and the paranoia over new girl, Lily, possibly being after her spot, may just push Nina over the edge.
Unfortunately, she's had to deal with an overbearing mother who has sheltered her to the point of psychological damage. Black Swan takes the viewers to another dimension of the psychological and emotional ties, the reality and the fantasy of a girl who wanted to dance and to dance perfect. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily Kunis , who impresses Leroy as well. Then when Thomas stands up, the mirror behind him shows David standing with arms akimbo but when the camera cuts to Nina, the mirror behind her shows David with his arms crossed again. During rehearsals, Thomas tells Nina to observe new dancer Lily, whom he describes as possessing an uninhibited quality that Nina lacks. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Portman and Kunis started training six months before the start of filming in order to attain a body type and muscle tone more similar to those of professional dancers. Furthermore, the corps ballet's costumes were designed by Zack Brown for the American Ballet Theatre , and slightly adapted by Westcott and her costume design department. Portman worked out for five hours a day, doing ballet, cross-training, and swimming. When I first heard that Mila Kunis had been cast as Lily, I wasn't exactly thrilled.
A publicized controversy arose regarding the question of who had designed 40 ballet costumes for Portman and the dancers. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side - a recklessness that threatens to destroy her. She lives with her obsessive former ballerina mother Erica Hershey who exerts a suffocating control over her. Portman and Kunis trained in ballet for several months before filming began, and notable figures from the ballet world helped with film production to shape the ballet presentation.
