Complementary Work: This would be a good time to install new spark plug wires. The easiest way to remove them is to get an old Torx screw out of something and hold the screw with vice grips. This is the center portion of the Optispark body. This will help it drain much quicker. This is the fun part for me at least. I use a shop rag and then duct tape it so no moisture can possibly destroy the unit. This Optispark kit includes all the pieces and attachments necessary to make the conversion, including manifold fittings, the vacuum hose assembly, and installation instructions.
Use a 14mm deep socket to remove the last water pump bolt. Refill the cooling system until it is full. Once installed no more missing when warmed up. Early style top caps must be drilled in a specific spot and at a specific angle to provide venting and a piece of vinyl hose will need glued in the hole. Before you do any detailing you should take a towel or shop rag and cover the hole in the Opti-Spark casing.
Now is the time to do it! But like I said after it was all said and done well worth it. Blowing into this hose will cause turbulence inside the Optispark that will cause any particles dislodged to collect at the other hose, and be blown out. We offer the most comprehensive and detailed parts catalogs on the market today and produce a different catalog for each Corvette generation. Be sure to open the bleed screws. I heard the Pep Boys early cap kit provides the proper early lower cap with a later style upper cap that has a plug in the vacuum hole. I want to get the cheapest thing that will work for awhile because I'm swapping the engine with an ls1 in the future and I don't want to dump a lot of money into this.
This will make reinstalling the water pump much easier. So I got to searching and since I order from Summit all the time, I figured I would give their brand dist. The final touch is the installation of a vacuum ventilation hose assembly with the correct check and restrictor valves to prevent distributor cap damage. After letting it run for a few minutes my car shut off. They actually use a flow through ventilation system that circulates air through the distributor cap. It is important that you blow into the hose with the blue elbow because of the way the Optispark is designed.
The outer edge of the slotted disc passes through a slot in the optical pickup, which reads the slots. I high ly recommend this part. Corvette Central has been a leading manufacturer and distributor of Corvette parts and accessories since 1975. After the design was completed the unit was passed on to what is called validation engineering. Pull the belt tensioner out of the way, and loosen the accessory belt. There are two large bolts 14mm and three small ones 10mm. You'll need new gaskets for installation.
Carefully remove the rotor, and the metal disc. Blow air into the one you disconnected from the intake blue elbow. Next, remove all plug wires and the two vent hoses if equipped - 95+. Now, remove the three I think 10mm bolts that hold on the Optispark. Make sure you line it up properly see step above where you removed it Put gasket sealant on the remaining gasket material, and reinstall the water pump.
Change the Optispark out and be up and running again. By this time I'm a lil skeptical if it was even the dist. I removed the early upper cap and replaced it with the late upper cap. From Blue Flame 6 to Z06, only Corvette Central has it all. Remove the coil wire, and the electrical connections from the Optispark and water pump. You should also pull the hose out of the bellow, and check for vacuum.
These distributors feature an aluminum housing with heavy-duty oilite bushings, and a glass-reinforced cap with high dielectric strength and aluminum terminals. This hose is routed from the intake down the accessory bracket following the same path. Don't worry about lining it up; it is indexed so it will only go on one way. I have had numerous problems with competitor optisparks and thought I would give the Summit brand opti a try. Vacuum the metal shavings from the previous step.
It should slide all the way on with no gaps on any of the mounting areas. Set aside everything, but the back plate. You could tell it was the optispark since it tried to kick but you could tell the timing was off. The casing of the Opti-Spark, which was mounted to the front of the engine, just behind the water pump, was designed with a small hole at the base. Remove the remaining plug wires.
